Behaviour Consultation

What is it?

Our master’s level consultants design, implement and evaluate strategies that support the goal of increasing the ability of people with challenging behaviours to experience greater success in life. Common areas of support include: difficulty with transitions, anxieties, physical outbursts such as meltdowns, as well as difficulties managing in social situations.

Who is it for?

Services can be tailored for children as young as 3 years old, through to adults of all ages. Services are typically provided to parents, caregivers, schools, support services agencies, as well as affected individuals themselves.

Where is it provided?

Home and community settings such as schools, work environments, day and residential programs, leisure activity settings, as well as at our KCC office location.

Counselling

What is it?

A variety of approaches are offered by KCC’s master’s level counsellors, including Play Therapy, Solution Focused Brief Therapy, Cognitive Behavioural Therapy, EMDR, and Parent Child Relationship Therapy. Counselling addresses relationships, personal growth, mental health, and psychological illness or distress. Other common counselling focuses include resolving specific problems, making decisions and coping with crisis.

Who is it for?

Counselling is available to children, youth, adults, couples and families. Play therapy can be a particularly beneficial approach for children and youth to explore ways to deal with life’s challenges.

Where is it provided?

Counselling is typically provided at our KCC office, but other settings have been used, including schools and other community settings, as well as in homes.

KCC’s master’s level Occupational Therapist works to support individuals to more successfully manage challenges they experience in their everyday activities, including, physical, mental and environmental challenges.

Speech-Language Pathology

What is it?

Assessing and helping individuals who have difficulties with the production of speech sounds, understanding or putting words together to communicate ideas (language) or difficulty with social interactions. Common areas of focus include articulation, phonology and motor speech disorders, language delays and disorders, including expression and comprehension in oral and non-verbal contexts, fluency disorders, including stuttering, social communication skills, swallowing disorders, pre-literacy and literacy skills including phonological awareness, decoding, reading comprehension and writing.

Assessments

What is it?

KCC psychologists and master’s level clinicians provide a variety of assessments including functional, educational, cognitive, parenting, and those related to the diagnosis of specific disabilities. Through a combination of testing, interviews, observations and consultations, assessments will identify both strengths and weaknesses and provide recommendations to support future success.

Who is it for?

Assessment services can be administered to individuals of all ages.

Where is it provided?

Assessments are conducted in many settings, including home, community, and at our KCC office location.

Cost

Costs vary depending on the type of assessment being administered. Some assessments are requested by schools, the court or a lawyer, or government services, and the costs associated with those assessments may not be charged to the individual and/or their parent/guardian.

Project I.C.E.

What is it?

Project ICE (Independence, Competency, Employment) exists to help assist and equip individuals that need support in functional life skills and / or employment readiness. A core component is the PAES program (Practical Assessment Evaluation System) which is an assessment and job skill teaching resource that individuals participate in small groups for 12 weeks with the support of a fully trained multi-disciplinary staff.

Who is it for?

The target age range is 15 years through adulthood.

Where is it provided?

At our KCC office location as well as some community settings to promote application of life skills.

Program costs will be assessed on a case by case basis. KCC is currently in discussion with funders and other service providers to provide financial support for individuals who would benefit from participating in our programs.

Junior I.C.E

What is it?

Junior I.C.E. (Independence. Competency. Experience.) is an inclusive program designed for youth, where all individuals regardless of ability learn together in a safe and friendly group environment.

  • Junior I.C.E has 4 Pillars social skills, life skills, regulation and mental health.
  •  This program focuses on teaching participants social and life skills along with education and support strategies for common mental health challenges, emotional regulation, hygiene, self-esteem and belonging.
  •  The overarching objective of Junior I.C.E. is to provide the tools necessary to promote positive mental health, increased independent living skills and social skills and of course to have a lot of fun.

Who is it for?

The target age range is 12-15 years of age.

Where is it provided?

At our KCC office location. There may be some programming occurring in community settings to promote application of life skills.

Walk and Talk Therapy

What is it?

Walk and Talk Therapy is a form of counselling that incorporates walking outdoors (Henderson Lake or Chinook Lake Park) while talking about issues problems solving, and developing/utilizing skills with your counsellor.

Who is it for?

Walk and Talk Therapy is for individuals who would like to receive counselling from a more therapeutic approach that enhance the outcome by bringing the clients in touch with their body and mind, thereby promoting healing and transformation.

Where is it provided?

Walk and Talk Therapy sessions will occur at Henderson Lake (1103 31A Street South) or Chinook Lake Park (Bluefox Blvd N.). In the event there is inclement weather conditions, a decision will ideally be made prior to 2 hours before the start of the session.

Cost

Walk and Talk sessions will be billed at 1.25 hours which includes travel time to session location or at 1.0 hours which will reduce the length of session to 45 minutes which will include travel time.


Inclusive Child Care (ICC)

What is the Inclusive Child Care Program?

The goal of the Inclusive Child Care (ICC) Program is to support licensed child care programs and approved family day homes agencies to successfully meet the developmental needs of all children by building their capacity and confidence to create an inclusive environment for all children.

The ICC Program is funded by the Alberta government and administered by Key Connections Consulting Inc. in the southern Alberta region. It is free to access for eligible child care programs.

What is provided?

The ICC program is focused on building skills for programs and educators that:

  • Support the inclusion of all children
  • Support best practice strategies for inclusive practices in early education
  • Support and meet the developmental needs of all children
  • Support the education and implementation of trauma informed best practices
  • Enhance knowledge and navigation of available community supports in their area

Available supports include:

  • Information and referral services
  • Observation and consultation sessions provided by ICC program coaches, speech-language pathologists, behaviour consultants, and/or occupational therapists
  • Support plans developed collaboratively with the program and multi-disciplinary team of professionals to enhance skills related to early childhood learning and development
  • Professional development opportunities

What to expect?

  • Regular coaching and consultation sessions
  • Receive recommendations for skills and strategies to support the capacity of educators and programs
  • Directors and team leaders of the program will be required to participate in programming in order to build consistency across the entire child care program
